When it comes to Healthcare and Life Sciences, communication is key to patient satisfaction. Developing a web-based solution created a more open channel and improved overall efficiency for staff and patients.

The client is a leading healthcare and life sciences company based in the United States, specializing in genetic testing and diagnostics to provide personalized patient care.

Challenge

The client approached Orion with a request to develop a solution that would facilitate communication between patients and medical professionals, specifically obstetricians, transplant physicians, oncologists, and cancer researchers, including biopharmaceutical companies, and genetic laboratories. The primary focus of the project was to improve the accuracy of organ transplant rejection assessment.

One of the biggest challenges was the client’s requirement for a short time-to-market, expecting the developed features to be in production within 1 or 2 weeks.

Solution

Orion Innovation began working on a B2B web portal solution. The portal aimed to enable clinics and labs to digitally submit transplant rejection test requests, monitor their progress, and access test results. The first version of the portal was prepared by Orion in less than 3 months, leading the client to request a similar solution for an Oncology web portal. As the collaboration progressed, the team expanded from 7 to over 40 members, including UX/UI designers, frontend/backend developers, QA and test automation engineers, managers, and an analyst.

Both dashboards gave doctors and other staff fast and easy access to information, making operations more efficient. The dashboard enabled monitoring of various requests and information, user management, clinic settings, notifications, and a secure channel for results distribution.

Additionally, a separate single-page application was developed to visualize the movement of test samples within the laboratory. This application allowed for the display of monitored parameters on TV screens and desktops of laboratory personnel, facilitating frequent analysis and timely optimization.

Apart from web development services, our team also provided automation testing. In collaboration with the client’s DevOps team, we contributed to the development of a testing environment booking system. This system prevented interference in simultaneous system testing conducted by multiple engineering teams.

Impact

The introduction of the web portal allowed the client to go paperless and create an added value to the existing product. Through process automation, the client managed to significantly reduce the test turnaround time from several weeks to a few days. This resulted in reduced waiting times for patients and increased laboratory throughput, improving overall efficiency.

A cloud-based patient communication platform is a secure digital system that connects patients, healthcare providers, laboratories, and other stakeholders. In healthcare and life sciences, it helps manage requests, share test results, track case progress, and improve communication through a centralized web portal.

Digital communication improves the speed, accuracy, and security of information sharing between patients, clinicians, and laboratories. It reduces manual processes, minimizes delays, and enables healthcare teams to collaborate more effectively, helping deliver faster patient care and better operational efficiency.

Web portals allow clinics and laboratories to submit test requests, monitor progress, and access results from a single interface. By replacing paper-based processes with digital workflows, they improve visibility, reduce administrative effort, and make it easier for healthcare staff to manage daily operations.

Automating laboratory workflows reduces manual tasks and shortens test processing times. Healthcare organizations can improve turnaround times, increase laboratory throughput, reduce errors, and provide patients and physicians with faster access to diagnostic information.

Healthcare organizations should modernize their communication platforms when manual processes create delays, limit collaboration, or affect patient experience. Cloud-based platforms are particularly valuable when organizations need secure information sharing, scalable operations, and faster delivery of diagnostic services.

Cloud-based platforms support faster software delivery by enabling agile development, continuous testing, and scalable infrastructure. This allows healthcare organizations to release new features more frequently while maintaining system reliability, security, and compliance with evolving operational requirements.

Test automation improves software quality by validating new features quickly and consistently before release. In healthcare applications, automated testing helps reduce defects, supports frequent software updates, and enables multiple engineering teams to work simultaneously without disrupting testing activities.

Digitizing diagnostic workflows improves operational efficiency by reducing paperwork, accelerating test turnaround times, and increasing laboratory capacity. It also enables healthcare professionals to access information more quickly, helping them make timely decisions while improving the overall patient experience.
